How it works
Split the total by nights. Split extras however makes sense.
One person booked the room. Three friends arrived on Thursday, two left Saturday, one stayed through Sunday. The bill shows a single total. Who owes what?
The fair default is by nights stayed. Add up everyoneβs nights to get total person-nights, divide the room cost by that, and each person pays their nights Γ the per-night rate. The shares always sum back to the total β no missing pennies, no one paying an extra few cents.
Extras work differently. A resort fee or cleaning charge is per-room and usually splits equally or by nights. Parking is typically per-night. Breakfast or the mini-bar is per-person and should go to whoever used it. You can set each extra separately β equal, by nights, or a custom split per person.
Per-night fairness
Each person pays for the room-nights they actually consumed. Works whether everyone stayed the same time or someone crashed for one night.
Flexible extras
Split resort fees, parking, cleaning, breakfast, or the mini-bar separately. Each extra can use its own split method.
Custom per-person shares
Assign who pays what down to the cent. Shares mode for ratios, amounts mode for a straight per-person breakdown.
Private by default
Runs entirely in your browser. Your guests, room cost, and extras are never sent anywhere. Saved to local storage.
Frequently asked questions
How do you split a hotel room when everyone stays a different number of nights?
Calculate a per-night rate from the total room cost and the total person-nights, then multiply each person's nights by that rate. Example: a $600 room across 10 person-nights (three friends staying 4, 3, 3 nights) is $60 per person-night, so the shares are $240, $180, $180. This tool does that math automatically.
What about resort fees, parking, or breakfast β how should those be split?
It depends on the extra. A resort fee or cleaning fee is usually per-room and makes sense to split equally or by nights. Parking is typically per-night. Breakfast or a spa charge is per-person and should be charged to whoever used it. This calculator lets you pick equal, by-nights, or custom for each extra separately.
Is "by nights" really the fairest way?
It's the fairest default when people stayed different durations but shared the same room. Each person pays for the room-nights they actually consumed. If one person had the room to themselves on some nights, by-nights slightly under-charges them β in that case switch to a custom split and assign full nightly rate for solo nights.
What if two people shared a bed and one had a rollaway?
The "by nights" approach still works for the room cost if the hotel charged one flat rate. If the hotel charged extra for the rollaway, add it as an Extra assigned only to that person via the custom split.
Can I use this for Airbnb or hostels?
Yes. The same math applies to any per-room or per-unit booking where people stayed different numbers of nights. For multi-room Airbnbs with different room sizes, the Rent Split Calculator handles room-size premiums.
Does this save my work?
Yes, in your browser's local storage. Close the tab, come back later, everything is still there. Nothing is sent to a server.
