Frequently asked questions
How does the AI receipt splitter work?
You take a photo of any receipt (or upload one), the tool resizes it client-side to a compact JPEG, and sends it to an AI model that extracts every line item with its price and quantity. You then tap friends under each item to assign who had it. Everyone's share is calculated live as you go.
Does it read handwritten or international receipts?
Yes to both. The AI recognizes the receipt's language and pulls line items in that language. It also handles printed receipts in dozens of languages and most common currencies. Handwritten receipts work best when the handwriting is clean.
What happens if the AI misses an item or gets a price wrong?
Every detected item is editable. Tap to change the name, quantity, price, or emoji. You can also delete items and add missing ones manually. Use it as a 90% starting point — corrections are quick.
How does the split math work?
Each item's cost is divided equally among the friends you assign to it. If no one is assigned, the item splits across everyone in the group. Per-friend totals are the sum of their item shares, rounded to the cent.
Is my receipt photo saved anywhere?
No. The photo is optimized and sent once to the AI endpoint for item extraction, then discarded. The items, friends, and assignments are saved only in your browser's local storage, not on a server.
How is this different from Splitwise or Venmo?
Splitwise's receipt scanner is OCR-based, reads only the total, and is behind a paywall. Venmo isn't a splitter at all. This tool uses AI to read every line item for free — same engine as the Supasplit mobile app, which adds ongoing balances, groups, currency conversion, and reminders.
